Phaco handpiece is a very delicate part of the phacoemulsification machine. It is critical to handle it properly before, during, and after surgery in order to increase its longevity and life span. Performing the cleaning after each surgery is very important.

Below are the Bausch and Lomb BL3170 Stellaris phaco handpiece and BL3270 fragmentation handpiece manual cleaning procedure instructions.

Clean and flush handpiece as follows:

  1. Remove the silicone irrigation sleeve and the needle if attached. Remove any tubing from the rear of the handpiece.
  2. Wipe the handpiece using a soft cloth moistened with a mild soap water solution. Avoid excessive quantities of solution around the electrical connector. Remove all traces of the solution with a cloth dampened with clear water. The surfaces should then be dried with a lint-free cloth.

CAUTION: Use warm distilled or deionized water between 30 oC and 40 oC to flush the handpiece.

  1. Flush irrigation lumen (phaco only) as follows:
  2. Place the end of the syringe into a beaker of warm distilled or deionized water, and fill the syringe to the 50cc mark.
  3. Connect the end of the syringe to the center stopcock fitting.
  4. Rotate the stopcock lever to allow fluid flow to the male Luer fitting.
  5. Connect the stopcock male Luer fitting to the handpiece irrigation fitting.
  6. Push on the syringe plunder to force fluid through the handpiece into another beaker for proper disposal. DO NOT DRAW FLUSHING BACK THROUGH THE HANDPIECE. Disconnect the syringe.
  7. Repeat steps 1 through 5 at least three times.
  8. Fill the syringe with air, reattach to stopcock, and push on the syringe plunder to force air through the handpiece. Disconnect the syringe.
  9. Repeat step 7 at least three times.
  10. Flush aspiration lumen (phaco and fragmentation) as follows:
  11. From the rear of the handpiece, insert the aspiration brush into the aspiration fitting.
  12. Push the brush bristles through the handpiece aspiration tube, then pull the brush back out. Clean the brush after each use and sterilize at the end of each day according to instructions bellow.
  13. Refill the syringe with 50cc of warm distilled or deionized water.
  14. Connect the end of the syringe to the center stopcock fitting.
  15. Rotate the stopcock lever to allow to the female Luer fitting.
  16. Connect the stopcock female Luer fitting to the handpiece aspiration fitting.
  17. Push on the syringe plunder to force fluid through the handpiece into another beaker for proper disposal. DO NOT DRAW FLUSHING FLUID BACK THROUGH THE HANDPIECE. Disconnect the syringe.
  18. Repeat steps 3 through 7 at least three times.
  19. Fill the syringe with air, reattach to stopcock, and push on the syringe plunder to force air through the handpiece. Disconnect the syringe.
  20. Repeat step 9 at least three times.

After you are finished with the manual cleaning it’s time for sterilization.

CAUTION: DO NOT STERILIZE THE HANDPIECE PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE CLEANING PROCEDURE DESCRIBED ABOVE.
