Retinoscope

Retinoscopy is a method to measure the refractive error on the eye of a patient. The doctor uses a retinoscope to shed light in the eye and watch the reflexes of the retina. As the doctor moves the light over the pupil either he observes the movement of the reflex or he puts lenses above the eye with the assistance of a frame to “stop” the reflex.

Static retinoscopy is a different way to use a retinoscope in order to determine the refractive error. It utilizes the knife-edge test from Foucault, which says that the ophthalmologist should simulate optical infinity to extract the proper refractive power. Thus, a power attending to the working distance is removed from the gross retinoscopy value to provide malfunction, the working distance lens having a focal length of the doctor’s distance from the patient.
