Phaco handpiece is a very fragile part of the phacoemulsification machine. It is critical to handle it properly before, during, and after surgery in order to increase its longevity and life span. Performing the cleaning after each surgery is very important.

- With the phaco infusion sleeve, and phaco needle still in place on the handpiece, inject 60cc of distilled water through the infusion line of the phaco handpiece.
- Next, inject 60cc of distilled water through the aspiration line of the phaco handpiece. It is helpful to use the female/female connector to attach the syringe to the aspiration line.
- Carefully remove the phaco infusion sleeve and phaco needle from the handpiece for autoclaving.
- Wipe the power cable of the handpiece with gauze soaked in distilled water.
WARNING: Improper/inadequate cleaning may result in particulate matter adhering to the instrument and exfoliation of particles info the surgical field. In addition, the function and life expectancy of the phaco handpiece may become compromised.
CAUTION: Do not clean the phaco handpiece with any type of ultrasonic cleaning device; it will damage the piezoelectric crystals. Do not use tap water for cleaning.
After you are finished with the manual cleaning it’s time for sterilization.
CAUTION: DO NOT STERILIZE THE HANDPIECE PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE CLEANING PROCEDURE DESCRIBED ABOVE.
